Sobre POLARIS (2021)

(English below)

POLARIS (2021), for Toy piano and flute, clarinet, violin and cello quartet, is written at the request of Antonietta Loffredo and the Appasionato Ensemble, within the project "Constellations" and is dedicated to Luis de Pablo.

The title alludes both to the compositional procedure used and to the role that Luis de Pablo's teachings had in my musical and cultural training.

I have worked on musical materials, very reduced, appealing to a fragmented memory in the listener, who reconstructs them as they are positioned, grouped and interact, continuously transforming the perspective of their listening. Within this process, the Toy piano plays a certain role as a referential axis that allows the listening to be re-anchored to a fixed point.

From Piano to Toy Piano: composing as a Rite of Passage

ABSTRACT

In this talk I will discuss the work I did with the piano students of Antonietta Loffredo in the workshop "Seriously or jokingly? Toy piano composition workshop for early stages".  As a result of this workshop, the students wrote a series of pieces composed by them for toy piano. We also worked on improvisation as a complementary activity with elements  differentiated from, but also related to,  musical composition.

The choice of the toy piano favors some aspects that help the initiation to compose. At this student level, to compose means a change of perspective, a step to another way of understanding music, indeed a passage to another musical reality. The toy piano is a new instrument for all of them, so they have to do prior work of exploration to understand how that new instrument works, and they have to react to its sound and possibilities; but at the same time it is a familiar instrument, so they can manage it very well. Also, it has a restricted range of possibilities that makes the writing easier. Last, but not least, the toy piano is freed from the sometimes overwhelming weight of music repertoire of the past. This gives the act of creating music a playful aspect, outside the overwhelming responsibility that the concept of composing sometimes implies. The response of the pupils was very interesting in many senses, as you will see and hear.

About "Toy Counterpoints", for Toy Piano

Published by BabelScores

1-Moderato
2-Allegro deciso
3-Toy Dance

My toy piano works are the result of Antonietta Loffredo's incitation to write for this instrument. These are pieces for a 25 keys toy piano. It is a very limited register but i loved the restriction of write a score combining careful and detailed writing with the naif and magic sound of this instrument.

Toy Counterpoints is dedicated to Antonietta Loffredo. The first (Moderato) and the second (Allegro deciso) were composed at 2015 and premiered by Antonietta at Risuonanze, Incontri di nuove musiche at Molfalcone. The third (Toy Dance) was recently (2019) premiered at Como, at The Music as Play Festival. While the second piece is a kind of Passacaglia with some jokes in it, the first and the third move in a magic-oniric universe, but Toy Dance becomes almost hypnotic, a kind of inner ritual dance.
